ARTS & DRAFTS

Hola! My body is back from Mexico but my brain has missed the connecting flight. This has been a week of nothing but Thursdays for me and I’m not sure why. Monday I was acting like it was Thursday. Yesterday? I made a dinner reservation for “tomorrow” thinking it was Friday. And today I showed up at a meeting that is scheduled for tomorrow–Thursday! Wishful thinking or permanent damage from my attempt to surf? Unclear. But it was worth it because I had a blast.

I hope you liked the pictures I Tweeted. Those are the only (appropriate) ones I had on my phone. The rest will trickle in as everyone uploads their cameras so I will share more as they come.

While I was away Office Elf Alisha did an ah-mazing job keeping things moving. Thank you for Blah-gging and for posting the cover of PRETENDERS. What do you think of the official name? After considering thousands, PRETENDERS was the clear winner. And it only took 11 months. (Gulp). More proof that writing is a “process.”

Developing, drafting, redrafting, deleting, loving, hating, loving again, editing… you really have to adore the ACT of writing because that’s what this is really about. The ACT. Once the piece is complete you are no longer writing it. It’s done. You have birthed the baby and the rush is gone.

Do you love your baby? Too bad. It doesn’t belong to you anymore. It belongs to the reader now. She may love it, she may hate it. She may think it’s meh. The only part of it that was yours and yours alone was the process. This applies to all artists, not just writers. It takes a lot of patience and passion to succeed because as every artist knows there are hundreds of no’s for every yes.

Don’t believe me? Look at these early versions of the book cover.

LTS cover#1            LTS2

LTS3        Pretenders ARC cover

While they are no where close to being as fab as the final we never would have ended up here without them. So here’s to all of our rejects. Thank you for sucking. Without you the winners wouldn’t be possible.

Happy Thursday!

TTYW,

Lisi

I likes the 3rd cover better it looks more new and i would probaly be more interested in the third cover then the final one that you chose but i am super excited to read it anyways! Like they always say “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover” lolz

Lisi, I liked your version of Monster High better….

  • Lillie says:

Sounds like Mexico was a blast! Glad you had a good time.
The PRETENDERS sounds way better than The Phoenix 5, but I’m not sure if I like it yet. I’ll see when the book comes out,
The name is lacking that pizzazz that came with The Clique. I’m sure it’s still excellent.
Are we going to expect a book or promotional tour anytime soon?

  • Kortlynn says:

Ah Mexico, sounds like a supper amount of fun! I did actually like the Phoenix Five title but The Pretenders is cool too! Seriously can’t wait to read it! Reminds me of a poem I wrote in like 7th grade.
“The real person inside is someone nobody knows.
All throughout life it changes and grows.
Then sometimes we wonder if we ourselves know,
That person inside, who pretends and never shows.”

The Pretenders, is an interesting name. It sorta reminds of The Outsiders by S.E Hinton. 😉
I look foreward to it’s release date!!

I love how simple the name is, and the cover is pretty cool too! I can’t wait to get my hands on the book.
I always live for Thursdays… that’s the day I go to Creative Writing club. 😉

  • Laila N says:

Epicus title, epicus cover, epicus process to reach success… okay, perhaps not the latter. To add to the Thursday fun, your posts are technically on a Thursday, Aussie time 😉

  • Shaila Gottlieb says:

Love the line about your brain missing the connecting flight! Love the blahg

  • Julia says:

P.S.- That dog is adorable! You also look very pretty, Lisi!!!!!!!

  • Julia says:

Oh, I like the 3rd one!!
Did you watch the Superbowl, Lisi? I thought you would say something about Beyonce or something. Speaking of babies and Beyonce, if she was my mom, I would find it weird to have my mom doing all those sexy moves! Haha! 🙂
    Like the name, sounds cool-i-oooo!

  • Kaitlyn says:

I think that’s the hardest part about writing, is letting your baby go in to the readers hands.

  • Arianna says:

Yay for an awesome cover and title!!! And I know the feel thinking every day is Thursday. I really wanted to go to my Creative Writing class today, but it’s only on Tuesdays and Thursday so I got stuck with Biology and my Bio Lab (Which makes me want to kill myself) instead. I’m glad Mexico was fun! Next time stop by Texas and give us a holler! I can’t wait for PRETENDERS!! Have a good week and weekend!

I’m so happy that the name is set and you had a great time in Mexico. The Pretenders, it’s an interesting name. Now I have to wait til it comes out, which probably is going to kill me, but whatever. Can’t wait for next Wednesday, don’t get to confused with the days! 🙂
