Clique Connection

Hi friends. I had an entirely different blah-g post in mind for today, and then I got Taylor’s message. I couldn’t help myself. I had to respond.

Here’s what she said:

Hey, Lisi!
I’ll try not to take up too much of your time and bore you with one of those “your book really changed my life” stories because those are so cliché. I just wanted to tell you that I started reading The Clique in sixth grade and I fell in love instantly. After I read your books I began to read different kinds of literature and then I began to write. I finished The Clique series my sophomore year of high school and literally felt like I’d lost five of my best friends. I honestly felt as if I had grown up with these girls and shared their struggles and triumphs. I am now a freshman in college pursuing a career in English, and, hopefully soon, journalism too. Without you and your amazing books, I don’t think I would be writing today. I just wanted to thank you for inspiring me to do this and giving me five of the most amazing best friends a girl could ask for, even if it was only for a few years. Though they were
fictional, they’ll always be in a special place in my heart, and so will you!
-Taylor Johnson

That seriously brings a tear to my eye. The left one. The right one is throbbing from staring at a computer for the last five hours. Those girls were as much a part of my life as they were yours. They lived inside my head for years and took 30 years to form. Writing fiction is like getting a golden ticket to travel to a new universe. One that plays by your rules and is inhabited by the creatures you create. It’s also a really cheap form of therapy. I get to work out all of my angst and issues and you get to read about them. Hmmm, maybe that’s not therapy. Maybe that’s more of a perversion–some form of mental flashing. Whatever you want to call it I am grateful. Grateful as a reader, a compulsive writer, and a pale California girl who has found a way to connect with people like you.

Thank you for the kind words Taylor! So proud to have you in the Clique.

Hi Lisi, i really dont want you to have another ‘your book really changed my life’ comment but i would just like to say, i started reading your book in the 7th grade and yeah, it helped me through the struggling adolescence years of middle school trying to fit in but i never did, every six months or so i would beg my mum to take me to the book store to buy another book, i now write books, although they are no good i enjoy it, because reading and writing takes you to a whole other world where it is your rules to write, i would love to hear back from you…. also, dont sue me for trying to fit in!

    • Leesh, I’d never. Your note truly made my evening. I’m so glad my books got you through that tough time and that they inspired you enough to write stories of your own. I couldn’t ask for a better compliment than that.

  • Just wondering, what is Alicia Rivera’s real middle name?

  • I can totally relate! I read The Clique in middle school and I have read the series three times! I just finished re-reading them and I’m a senior in high school.

  • Really good blah-g post!

  • Lisi!
I feel the same! Im going to pursue a writing career because you made it my dream! If you dont have a second clique movie, please have one for Skye! 🙂 i would love to help with that! And i would sooo go see it and make sure my friends do also. The Clique has been a passion of mine for 5 years now.

I feel the exact same! Please have a second movie or write another clique book! My life would be complete 🙂

  • Oh, and Lisi, what is your Instagram username? I’m gonna follow if you have one.

  • You know what? I felt the SAME EXACT WAY! No joke! When the book ended in the last one, I totally felt as if half of my heart had just dropped and there was an empty space there. I LOVE you Lisi. The best writer in the world.

I can relate to Taylor. I was in the 6th grade when the first book came out and it was like Christmas morning every six months when I would beg my mom to take me to Target so I could get the newest book. I’m 23 now and still have the entire series of The Clique and The Alphas. :’)
