Girls! Girls! Girls!

You know what a problem bullying is. You know how vile girls can be toward one another. What you might NOT know is that good girlfriends are THE most important relationships you can have in this life. As you get older and life becomes more challenging, they will be there for you in ways you can’t imagine. Guys give us tingles. Family gives us unconditional love (if we’re lucky.) But good girlfriends fill in all the spaces in between. So stop worrying about fitting in with the popular girls. If they are snots and make you feel like crap YOU ditch THEM and go find the good ones–ones like you.

I say this because I am going through some great-big-huge …

Me: Exposed

You know how models make a big deal about posing in magazines without makeup or Photoshop? As much as we like to bust on them for it, I get it. Fooling us into thinking they are more genetically evolved than us is how they make their money. And goading you into thinking I am an (HYPERBOLE ALERT) off-the charts intellect who poops several flawless novels a year is how I make mine. But I have a behind-the-scenes team, too. They just care more about making my words look pretty than my… everything else.

Here’s how:

Once upon a time I became a huge outliner. I still spend months and dozens of pages drafting my outline so the story and structure …

Cupid Rhymes With…

I’d like to begin today’s Blah-g with a poem…

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Is it me?
Or does Valentine’s Day suck?

If you are one of the few people who enjoy this Hallmark holiday, forgive me. It’s just that I don’t like being told how to feel or when to feel it. My stubborn heart has nothing to do with the fact that February 14th marks the anniversary of the day I got dumped, disappointed, stood-up, bored, food poisoned, acne infested, dateless, depressed …forget it. I won’t saddle you with my sob stories. I will say that every other day of the year except when there’s a full moon or I’m PMSing I sweat glitter and sneeze love. …

Guest Post on the Office Elf Blog

Lisi is away on a mini holiday in Mexico this week enjoying some much needed sunshine and downtime. I’ve guest blogged in lieu of her usual post and am sharing some photos from this weekend’s huge literary event here in Los Angeles, the 2nd annual LA Art Book Fair. Click the obvious bumper sticker statement below to get redirected over to the Office Elf blog.

As usual, Lisi will be back next week!

xx,

Alisha

Timeless Guidance – Erin’s Advice on Getting Published

Many of you have been coming to the blah-g lately saying, “Lisi, you always give the best advice…” and when I read that, I can’t help but to dole out more. But when I read TacoChic’s comment that guy advice seems to be my thing, I knew it was time to switch those things up. And in an effort to be more than one note, I’m going for Janine’s question today on how to get your first book published. Here’s her question:

Hey Lisi,

Your books are truly amazing!
I want to become a writer myself and as clichéd that probably sounds I dream of being one since I was little. I used to write short stories – well actually

#JuniorCougarClub

Am I happy you are all getting crushed by crushes? Of course not. I’m just glad you’re coming to me for advice and not solely relying on your friends. No offense, friends, but you’re just as inexperienced as the one in need. I have decades of heartbreaks to draw from. Enough mean girl dramas to fill a Lifetime Channel. And more sleepless nights than Draculaura.

I will try to get to all of your questions eventually, especially if you start them with Lisi, you give the best advice…, but this week my crushed heart goes out to Biebs Girl.

Lisi, you give the best advice… What do you think about dating someone who’s younger than you and way shorter? This

How Good Girls Can Date Bad Boys

Anyone who begins their comment with, “Lisi, you always give the best advice…” is going to get my advice. That’s how well I respond to compliments. No one knows this better than Mikaelya. Check it:

Lisi, you always have the best advice… so what should I do? I really like this guy at my school (he’s a year older thank gawd) but he’s not into good stuff. I’ve heard tons of bad things about him from everyone who knows him (like he use to be a dealer (maybe still is), is obsessive when he likes a girl, pretty much goes to raves every night, and other things). I don’t want to judge him because of what other people have said,

Heavily Processed

As you can see by the glorious transformation of this webpage, superficial change is easy. Easier still if you have someone as brilliant and dedicated as Alisha the “office elf” doing it for you. But this is January, not December! You got the haircut, the glitter eyeliner, the whiter smile. You’re way past the point of superficial tweaks. You want real change, the subcutaneous kind, the stuff resolutions are made of. You want more muscle, less fat, higher grades, lower cholesterol, increased talking, decreased stalking…Whatever it is, you are going for it. Right now. And it’s going to happen. By MLK day.

… But what if it doesn’t?

What if your January finds you lifting weight, but dropping none?  What …

Teach His Own

In my next life I’d like to cruise the world in a food truck that’s been converted into a jazzy clothing boutique. In the life after that I’d like to name nail polish for a cosmetics line. Assuming I get one more after that, I’d like to teach creative writing in a school like Alpha Academy. The first two are givens, but I bet you’re wondering what inspired the teacher thing. I mean, I am not a lover of classrooms or their smells. And yet, I’d love to stand before you and school you on Pretenders. The problem is I don’t have the patience to reincarnate three times. I want to do it NOW. So I am working on a …

PARTYYYYY Live with Me

If you remember how much fun we had at my last Little Brown Live at the Lounge video chat with Megan McCafferty then you know this Holiday Live party is not to be missed.

Here’s the scoop on the event:

The Holiday Live at the Lounge on December 17th will feature LBYR YA authors Holly Black, Kami Garcia, A.S. King, Megan McCafferty, Margaret Stohl, and I chatting about everything from holiday plans, to new years resolutions, to our favorite holiday memory, to what to expect from each of us in 2014.  I’ll be wearing my ugliest holiday sweater and I hope you’ll join in on the chat wearing your finest tacky attire, too. Some of the authors attending the Holiday …
